Keats McGonigal

Keats McGonigal comes from an exensive endurance background. After running track and cross country at Mead High School, he attended Whitworth College where he ran the distance events. This running background provided Keats with the needed foundation to start his multisports career. He and his wife, April took up swimming as a mutual hobby, which led them both into racing triathlons. Keats has participated in a wide range of events including finishing six Ironman races. These include, Coeur d’Alene, France, Canada, and the World Championships in Hawaii.

Going beyond his personal racing experience, Keats has extensive education and certifications which provide him the needed skills to effectively coach other endurance athletes. Keats is currently certified as a USA Triathlon Coach, USA Triathlon Race Director, National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

Keats received his M.S. in Physical Education from Eastern Washington University where he taught a triathlon class and trained students in the fitness center. During his time at EWU, Keats was educated by coaches who work with US Olympic athletes. Keats currently works at the YMCA directing a triathlon program and personal training members.

Keats has coached athletes of all abilities from those learning to swim to those racing competitively at Ironman. He is passionate about helping athletes reach their individual goals and particularly enjoys working with athletes new to endurance events.

He began his triathlon journey in 2000 after moving to Honolulu. He has completed 75+ triathlons and running races since 1998. His philosophy of preparing and educating athletes leads to what he feels is the most important aspect of any training program: enjoying the journey! He feels the successful coaching of athletes is based on excellent communication, hard work, and attention to detail. He believes in working closely and in cooperation with athletes to define and refine their goals and teach them how to achieve them. His role as a coach involves motivating athletes, preventing injuries due to overtraining and challenging them to reach their goals. Scott understands the importance of keeping life in perspective through prioritizing family, work, and training. This balance is key to enjoying the journey! Winning trophies and medals is a nice bonus but the real reward to an athlete is this process, the journey. The real reward and success of coaching is helping athletes reach their goals.
